COVID-19 Travel Guide: Fall Getaways

Thinking about traveling this fall? You’re not the only one!

What’s right for you and your family?

We’re not doctors, health experts, or anything coming close to that. But let’s be honest — if you don’t feel comfortable traveling because of health reasons, stay at home! We won’t judge.

If you have anyone who is at risk, they definitely shouldn’t come along, and you should consider doing whatever your doctor recommends if you plan on traveling without them upon your return.

How should I get there?

Cars seem to be good, if only because you’re limiting your interactions with the randomness of the public at large. That’s what we’re doing, mostly, when we want to get away for the weekend.

Taking a flight can be safe, and you can hedge your bets by choosing the right airline. Every airline has a different approach to cleaning and social distancing. Also, consider flying in off-peak times: during the middle of the week and avoiding early morning and evening flights.

What should I expect when I arrive?

Simply said, some changes. A lot of resorts and hotels are enforcing heightened safety protocols. Contactless check-in, capacity limitations, and more rigorous cleaning procedures are all part of the plan to keep you safe.

These changes may be based on city and state regulations, and/or simply the management of the hotel, rental property, or resort you are visiting. Because there are new rules from multiple parties, do your research. The state park you planned to visit may require reservations. The famous farmers market around the corner from your hotel may have different hours.

Our Recommendation

Do your due diligence before you book a stay or plan activities. And most importantly, check with the hotel, rental property, or resort to find out what changes they’ve made to keep you (and their staff) safe. Travel in 2020 and 2021 is going to make us all a lot better at rolling with the punches.
