Making plans for holiday travel? Now is the perfect time to start planning.
What’s right for you and your family?
We’re not doctors, health experts, or anything coming close to that. But let’s be honest — if you don’t feel comfortable traveling because of health reasons, stay at home! We won’t judge.
If you have anyone who is at risk, you should talk to their doctor to see if they are safe to travel, and if not, you should consider doing whatever your doctor recommends to keep them safe upon your return.
How should I get there?
Cars will always be a good option, if only because you’re limiting your interactions with the randomness of the public at large. But we get it, holiday travel may mean longer drives and inclimate weather. So…
Taking a flight can be safe, and you can hedge your bets by choosing the right airline. Every airline has different approaches to cleaning and social distancing. But, at this point in time, we don’t know if all of these new safety precautions will still be around come November and December. Keep in mind that holiday season means an uptick in air travel. Bigger crowds equals more risk. Consider flying in off-peak times: potentially more than a few days before the actual holiday celebration and avoiding early morning and evening flights.
What should I expect when I arrive?
A times-old tradition of the holidays is crowding into the spare bedrooms and pullout mattresses of a designated family member’s house. This year might call for splurging on a hotel suite or rental property nearby. This will help minimize the amount of time you are crowding in with those around you who may be at risk. Spend quality time together at the table and not while sharing a bathroom.
Also consider how you will get around once you’ve arrived at your end destination. If you relied on rides from family members or a rideshare like Uber, you may want to consider a rental car.
Our Recommendation
There are many unknowns for what travel will look like at the end of 2020. Play it safe and make plans that allow you to control as many factors of your trip as possible.
